The first is this serge protector. You plug your TV into the green plug and your other electronics into the green outlined plugs. When you turn off your tv, all power is cut to all devices. Since you need to keep your DVR or VCR (if you still have one of those) powered so that you can get all your shows recorded, you use one of the non green plugs and they will continue to receive power.
