DAY OF SILENCE

About the Day of Silence
The National Day of Silence is a day of action in which students across the country vow to take a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools.

History
Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence at the University of Virginia in 1996, to the organizing efforts in over 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in 2008, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.
The Day of Silence is a student protest. Since I'm not a student, I don't think keeping silent or not blogging is the best show of support. Here are some of my ideas:
  • Go see Bully - it's now in wider release and is really what the Day of Silence is about. (I'll be doing this)
  • Post about The Day of Silence (done)
  • Write and post about your own experience of being bullied. I don't think I was ever bullied because bullies thought I was gay but I was bullied: 1st because I wore glasses from the age of two, 2nd because I was short, 3rd because I wasn't good and/or didn't like the same sports and 4th because I was "different" and never really fit in.
  • Make a video about your experience and post it.
  • Talk to co-workers. Ask about their experience. Ask about their kid's experience.
  • Help parents remember their own experiences - I think parenthood comes with selective memory and parents tend to forget the pain and anguish of being a teenager.
What ideas do you have? What will you be doing?
